Spring 2026 Fashion Trends That Actually Work For Women Over 40

We love Spring here at MM Styling but we know all Spring trends won't work on everyone. Here is a bit of a guide so you can decide what works for you.

After months of heavy coats, thick jumpers and boots, it’s lovely to start introducing lighter fabrics, brighter colours and a few new pieces into the wardrobe. But we also know that for many women, fashion trends can feel a little bit overwhelming.

You might be wondering:

“Are these trends actually wearable for me?”

“Am I too old to try this?”

“Will I look like I’m trying too hard?”

And the answer is absolutely not.

In fact, we often say that trends become more important as we get older, because they stop our outfits from looking dated. The key is simply being selective and choosing the ones that work for your lifestyle and your body shape.

Because remember, style isn’t about following every trend that appears on the catwalk, it’s about finding the pieces that work for your real life.

Let’s get started.

Pastel Pinks

One of the standout colours for Spring 2026 is pale pink. It’s appearing everywhere this season, from blouses and knitwear to tailoring and accessories, and it’s a lovely way to introduce a softer feel into your wardrobe after winter.

However, pale pink can sometimes run the risk of looking a little too sweet if it’s not styled carefully! The key is to only wear it if it sits within your colour palette, and to balance it with more structured or neutral pieces. You should also avoid it in patterns which could date.

A very easy way to wear this trend is with something simple like a light pink shirt paired with a good pair of jeans. The denim immediately grounds the colour and stops the outfit from feeling overly sweet or overdone.

You could also layer a pale pink shirt under a jumper, so only the colour and cuffs are showing, which keeps the overall look polished and still gives a nod to the trend.

As always, the trick with trends is to introduce them in small, wearable ways, so your outfit still feels like you — just slightly more current.

Here are a some good options if you’d like to try this trend:

Woman in pink blouse and blue jeans sits on a woven stool against a white wall, exuding a relaxed, contemplative mood.
Person wearing a light pink short-sleeved sweater and blue jeans, standing with one hand in pocket against a plain white background.
Woman in pink sweater and blue jeans, holding a woven black bag. Wears sunglasses, stands against a plain white background. Casual mood.

Fringe & Tassels

Another detail we’re seeing return for Spring 2026 is fringe and tassels. They’re showing up on everything from jackets and handbags to skirts and scarves, adding a little bit of movement and texture to outfits.

Now the key with this trend is not to go overboard, otherwise it can very quickly start to feel a little bit like cowboy cosplay and that’s definitely not the look we’re going for!

Instead, think of fringe as a small styling detail rather than the main event.

A handbag with subtle tassel detailing, a scarf with a little bit of fringe on the edge, or even a jacket with very minimal trim can add interest to an outfit without overwhelming it.

This works particularly well with quite simple outfits. For example, if you’re wearing something classic like jeans, a shirt and a trench coat, adding a bag or scarf with a touch of fringe gives the outfit a bit of personality while still keeping it polished.

It’s also worth remembering that fringe naturally draws the eye because of the movement it creates. So placing it on accessories, rather than large areas of clothing, is often the easiest way to wear the trend.

You could even wear a fully fringed dress if it is done in an elegant way, something that gives more flapper than cowboy!

A woman in a brown textured dress stands on a concrete floor indoors, posing in black sandals. The background is a plain light wall.

As always, the overall aim is to add a small modern detail, not to completely change your style. A little bit of texture goes a long way.

Here are some simple pieces that can help you embrace this trend:

Woman in a dark, one-shoulder jumpsuit with a fringed shawl stands against a white background, exuding elegance and confidence.
Black netted pendant with a dark stone, featuring a long tassel. Set against a light gray background, creating an elegant, minimalist look.
A person wearing sunglasses and a scarf walks on a crosswalk. Dressed in a white tank top and pants, appearing casual and confident.

Military Jackets

Military-inspired jackets are another trend returning for Spring 2026, and this is one that works particularly well for women over 40 because it’s both practical, timeless and structured.

Typically, these jackets come in shades like khaki, olive green, or soft army green, however this year the high street is offering a varied range of colours. They often feature details such as buttons, epaulettes or subtle tailoring through the waist, bringing natural structure, which helps create balance to most figures. A slightly stronger shoulder or defined shape through the jacket can instantly make the silhouette look more proportioned.

They’re also incredibly versatile. You can wear a military jacket very casually with jeans and a simple t-shirt, or layer it over a dress if you want something a little bit more relaxed than a blazer. Some of the options on the high street are a nod to the trend rather than full military apparel, and this is a great way to take on the trend but not over do it.

Another advantage is the colour. Olive and khaki tones work almost like neutrals, pairing beautifully with denim, white, navy, beige and soft browns, so it’s very easy to mix into an existing wardrobe.

If you’re trying this trend, we would recommend choosing a clean, slightly tailored version rather than something overly heavy with lots of badges or embellishments. The simpler styles tend to look more modern and are far easier to style.

Think of it as a practical Spring jacket that adds a little bit of interest, rather than a full military-inspired outfit.

Some of the versions we love:

Person posing in an olive green blazer with gold buttons over a white shirt. A patterned scarf is around their neck. Beige background.
Woman in beige jacket and white pants stands on a wooden floor, against a beige background. She has a calm expression.

Balloon Trousers

Balloon trousers are another silhouette appearing for Spring 2026, and whilst they can look incredibly stylish, they do need to be worn carefully so the proportions stay balanced, the last thing we want you looking like is Coco the Clown!

The defining feature of balloon trousers is the extra volume through the leg, often tapering slightly towards the ankle. Because of that shape, it’s important not to add too much volume elsewhere in the outfit.

The easiest way to wear them is to keep the top half of your outfit slimmer and more structured. A fitted knit, a simple blouse, or a neatly tucked-in top works particularly well to create that contrast between the top and the fuller shape of the trousers.

Outerwear also makes a difference here. Balloon trousers look great with a long coat or a cropped structured jacket, as both of these shapes help frame the wider leg and keep the outfit looking balanced.

One thing we would avoid is rounded shoulders or very soft, slouchy jackets, because when everything is soft and curved, the outfit can start to look a little bit bulky. Instead, try to introduce some angles and structure through the shoulders, which helps balance the shape of the trousers.

It’s also worth saying that balloon trousers can be a little more challenging if you are shorter and curvier, as the extra volume can shorten the leg line. If you do want to try them, pairing them with a pointed kitten heel can really help add a little height and keep the proportions looking elegant.

As with many trends, the trick is simply choosing a softer version of the silhouette, with just a little volume rather than something extremely exaggerated. That way you get the modern shape without it overpowering the rest of your outfit.

Here are some of the ones we love currently:

A person in a light yellow shirt and loose black pants poses confidently against a plain white background, conveying a relaxed style.

A person in a white T-shirt and wide brown pants stands against a plain background. They wear striped shoes, exuding a relaxed, confident vibe.
Woman in beige blazer, white top, blue jeans holds a woven bag. Neutral textured background. Casual, stylish mood.

Short Sleeve Blazers

Another trend appearing for Spring 2026 is the short sleeve blazer. This is a really nice option for the transitional months because it gives you the structure of a blazer, but feels lighter and more relaxed than a full jacket.

Short sleeve blazers work particularly well when the weather starts warming up but you still want an outfit to feel polished and put together. They’re ideal for layering over simple pieces such as a t-shirt, lightweight knit, or shirt instantly elevating what might otherwise be quite a casual outfit.

They also work beautifully with jeans, tailored trousers or even wider-leg styles, helping to create structure across the shoulders while keeping the outfit balanced. As we always say with the Hourglass Balancing Method®, a little bit of structure through the shoulders often helps balance the body and creates a more defined silhouette.

If you’re trying this trend, we would keep the styling quite clean and simple. Choose neutral colours like navy, cream, soft beige or even some browns so the blazer becomes a versatile piece you can wear with lots of different outfits.

Think of the short sleeve blazer as a lighter Spring alternative to a traditional blazer, smart enough to polish an outfit, but relaxed enough for everyday wear.

Here are some great styles:

Woman in cream suit smiles, wearing sunglasses and gold earrings. Neutral background adds elegance. Relaxed and confident mood.
Woman in beige pinstripe suit stands confidently, hands adjusting jacket. Simple beige background, relaxed pose, minimal jewelry.

Lace

Lace is another fabric returning for Spring 2026, and when styled well it can look incredibly elegant and feminine. The key with lace, however, is making sure it doesn’t feel too twee or overly vintage...or what we sometimes describe as looking a little bit like grandmother’s curtains.

The easiest way to wear lace in a modern way is by contrasting it with more contemporary pieces. Rather than styling it in a very delicate or traditional way from head to toe, mix it with items that add a little bit of edge.

For example, a lace blouse worn with jeans and a suede or leather jacket instantly feels more modern. The softness of the lace combined with the structure of the jacket creates a lovely balance, and it stops the outfit from feeling overly romantic.

You can also introduce lace in smaller ways, such as a lace-trimmed camisole layered under a blazer, or a lace skirt paired with a simple knit. Keeping the rest of the outfit quite clean and minimal helps the texture stand out without overwhelming the look.

As always, it’s about balance. Lace can look beautiful, but pairing it with modern shapes, structured layers or slightly tougher fabrics ensures the outfit still feels current and effortless rather than overly delicate.

Some great examples of how to wear lace:

Woman in a cream sweater and lace skirt poses against a textured wall, holding a brown bag. She wears brown boots, exuding a stylish mood.
Woman in beige sweater with lace hem and dark pants, wearing a long tassel necklace. She stands against a plain gray wall, looking calm.

We hope this has given you a little bit of inspiration for refreshing your wardrobe this Spring without feeling like you need to completely start again.

Remember, trends are simply there to keep your outfits feeling current. You don’t need to wear all of them, just the ones that work for your lifestyle and your shape.

And often it’s the smallest changes that make the biggest difference.
